Don’t be fooled by all feel good stories about world. People sorting their trash, getting rid of animal farming, using solar panels instead of burning fossil fuels, is not enough.
Running away into space is the only option for humans to survive. If you did not notice it already is happening. Space companies are growing like crazy, rocket launches intensify. They say it is because prices went down. I know it is mass evacuation exercise, for now they send all kind of resources into orbit. Plan is to stay away for some time and then get back to earth and repopulate. Billionaires don’t make “stupid investments in space”, they know their chances. You already have seen movies about underground bunkers to hold survivors. Problems with such solutions are that if someone blows away location of such installation there will be mass of people going there. If you get your billionaire friends into space, guess what, no pleb can get there.
There is no Bruce Willis with nuke to break down and stop something approaching as quick and unexpected as CNEOS, 163373 (2002 PZ39). Right now we would need at least 5 years of preparation for deflection mission, and it would be too late as for now. Dust and debris from impact will create next global ice age and stop photosynthesis. That event will make living on earth really hard, maybe some people will manage to survive. Living on a space station is tough but if you have sunlight, resources to last a year, and not have to fight with anyone for those resources puts you on a lot better position than those on ground. With so many rockets starting in last years there could be resources for longer stay in the orbit already.
Only thing that we could be more afraid of is collision with magnitude that would shatter Earth. This would make plan of escape into orbit impossible because orbit would be not a safe place in face of such event. It might even affect colony on Mars if we would have one, because Earth leftovers would scatter in multiple directions, depending on impact direction.
